Irish Telecom Companies Are Solving Global Problems

Jun 1, 2023

A collaboration between Irish companies is bringing mobile connectivity to congested urban landscapes and pristine rural areas using streetworks solutions. The companies’ combination of capabilities is solving complex network installation challenges.

The solutions include the Alpha Wireless Tri-Sector antenna platform. It is compact and modular, lending itself to streetworks solutions that hide in plain sight and easily pass council approvals.

The Cellnex Get Connected program enables Irish communities to request service in a particular area of Ireland. Neutral host Cellnex proposes solutions using Alpha Wireless antennas to consolidate multiple operators on one pole or in one installation. Planning departments embrace the low-impact solution, and operators favor it because it makes service cost-effective in areas with less population.

This combination of technology and community vision is facilitating streetworks solutions across Ireland. The foundation of this new solution is innovation – in technology, but also ideas – companies thinking outside the box to resolve new challenges together.

Working Locally, Thinking Globally

Fergal Lawlor, CEO of Alpha Wireless, and Colin Cunningham, Managing Director of Cellnex Ireland, talked about the collaboration of Irish companies providing mobile coverage in Ireland and across the globe.

Irish Companies Are Helping Ireland Get Connected

Fergal

Several other local companies are working with us on these Get Connected projects. As you know, we’ve also partnered with  Jason Redmond JRA and Delmec

Colin

That’s the beauty of it, that we’ve brought together a combination of local companies. Alpha Wireless, JRA and Delmec have previously worked together as a team, relieving us of some of the effort. We’re quite happy to promote those relationships.

We said it at the very start. There’s an Irish solution to an Irish problem. Having Alpha based here in Ireland is a unique situation, and we had something on our doorstep that we weren’t using. We’ve now rolled out about 100 sites in Ireland with streetworks solutions.

A Solution for Quick Council Support

Fergal

Yes, it’s excellent progress and great working with Cellnex. It was a good vision to take this on over the years.

Colin

We’ve had council support from the start, like Laois. They saw an opportunity to work with companies based here in the Midlands. We need to thank them for helping us break down our process. The other councils saw what they were doing and said, wow, we should be doing this. We should be helping these companies expand.

When you look across the stakeholder map, there’s Cellnex, and then there’s the telecom supply, but you can’t forget about the many different stakeholders within the councils.

It goes right through the organization. When you go into the council map, you have the broadband officer, the director of services, the roads department, the permitting department and planning. So many people are involved in getting the job done. It’s probably the same for delivering regular sites, but in this case, there are many more people you have to bring along with you.

Fergal

It was great that Laois was able to lead the way, with four of these “Get Connected” sites already deployed in the county.
